New Year's Resolution: Best Foods for Teeth

With the New Year upon us, everyone is making resolutions. Most of them are about trying altering diet to stay healthier and get into better shape, but another benefit of changing your eating habits is healthier teeth and gums. This is a great reason to change things up for the healthier, and one that applies to your kids as well.  Here are some of the most teeth friendly foods, make it your 2015 resolution to make sure they get incorporated into your children’s diet this new year.

 Snacks

 Instead of stocking up on salty chips or sugary sweets, make sure your kids have access to plenty of crunchy vegetables for the perfect, quick finger foods. The crunch of veggies helps developing gums, while the vitamins and nutrients will build strong enamel. Fruits are a great alternative to junk food as well, but be sure to go for fresh or frozen as dried foods can easily stick to teeth, exposing them to enamel depleting sugars.

To change it up a little, dairy-based snacks like cheeses or yogurts are a great, delicious source of calcium to help growing teeth. This also makes milk a great alternative to sugary sodas, and make sure that water is always readily available. For some more typical, store bought snacks choose Jell-O and low sugar cereals from your grocery. These are delicious snacks that will help your child cut down on the sugar, but still be satisfied.

 Lunches

 If you’re looking for the perfect lunches to pack that will keep your kids happy and their teeth growing great, some of the best lunches involve a lot of the same things you can keep around the house for snacks. Mixing fruits with yogurt and nuts, like almonds, makes an easy, healthy, and delicious lunch that also supplies vitamins and calcium for proper oral health.

Another great alternative to typical store-bought lunches is lean turkey meat. It’s rich in phosphorous, helping to build strong teeth along with vitamin D and calcium. Another great alternative is choosing whole wheat breads, which are not only a great source of fiber, but don’t raise enamel harming acidity levels like white breads and other starches will.

Start 2015 off right for you and your children by changing up everyone’s diets. Keeping the usual junk food off the menu will not only help their teeth, but teach them great habits to promote better wellness for the rest of their lives.
