A deep bite is determined when the upper, front teeth almost completely overlap the lower front teeth – it is most detrimental to the teeth and health of the jaw joints. A deep bite also has an impact on facial aesthetics and is commonly corrected with orthodontic treatment.

An open bite is a term used to describe when the upper and lower teeth are unable to make physical contact with each other when the jaws are closed. Open bites are often a result of habits such as thumb or extended pacifier sucking or tongue thrusting. 

Severe crowding occurs when there is simply not enough room within the jaw for all of the teeth to fit normally.
